Reminder – No More Submitting Do Nows

Just a reminder that from now on Do Nows will not be submitted weekly or bi-weekly. At the beginning of class you are to look at the Do Now on the board and think of an answer. Each day Mr. Amutah will randomly ask a few different students for their responses to the Do Now for credit. You can get either full credit, partial credit, or no credit for your answer. Think of this as part of your participation grade.

In light of this change, Do Nows will no longer be placed on this website each day.

Reminder – World History Take Home Quiz

On Friday, February 13 you were given a take-home quiz to complete over the three-day weekend. The quizzes were due back on Tuesday, February 17. As of Tuesday, February 24 I have still received only about FIVE of these take-home quizzes. Remember that quizzes are worth 400 points and that for every week they are late students will have 50 points taken off of their quiz grades. If you do not turn in your take-home quiz at all your grade is a ZERO.

The questions are as follows:

1. How have Africans been treated by European nations?
(2 paragraphs)
2. How have Africans responded to their treatment by European nations?
(2 paragraphs)
3. Is Africa a positive or a negative place? In what ways?
(2 paragraphs)

When you answer these questions be sure to include specific details from our week-long overview of the different regions of Africa and from our study of Kenya and South Africa.

Reminder – Classroom Changes

There are a few changes that will be made to class this semester that everyone should be aware of. The changes are:

1) Homework assignments and Do Nows should be placed in a bin near the classroom door. Mr. Amutah will not collect homework assignments and Do Nows during class. It is up to students to remember to turn them in at the beginning of class.

2) Do Nows will be collected every week as oppose to every three weeks. They will be due each Friday.

3) Extra credit can now be achieved through: a) answer five questions regarding famous people from history whose face is on the classroom wall, b) creating a concept map based on two to five of the Terms to Know on the classroom wall, or c) writing a one-paragraph analysis of a political cartoon located in a folder at the front of the classroom.

Make-Up Work Assignments

The following readings and links may be used to complete assignments that you have missed thus far during the 2nd nine weeks:

Race and Conflict Theory CW
Read this (http://labornotes.org/node/1977) article and write three paragraphs about whether or not you think the bourgeoisie use race to keep Black and White workers from coming together.

Enlightenment Picture CW
Draw a picture about any person, idea, or innovation of the Enlightenment you think. Examples can be taken from Diderot’s Encycolpedie, Mozart’s piano-playing and symphonies, or Adam Smith’s concept of division of labor.

Do Now 4
Complete the Do Nows from 10/3 through 10/13. You can find them by clicking on the “Do Nows” link under categories on the right side of this page.

Enlightenment Impact HW
Write two paragraphs about which theme of the Enlightenment (love, happiness, hope, or tolerance) you feel is most important and why.

Election Chart HW
Using information such as this from CNN (http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/results/president/) make a chart showing the percentage of votes that McCain, Obama, and independent candidates gained in each of eight states in the south (Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana, Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina). To get the percentage of independent votes in each state add up the percentage of votes received by Obama and by McCain and then subtract that number from 100. For instance, in Florida Obama received 51% of votes and McCain received 48% of votes. Together this equals 99% of votes so 1% was left over for independent voters.

Industrial Revolution Flashcards HW
Students were instructed to create flashcards about the different inventors and inventions of the Industrial Revolution (such as Richard Arkwright, William Murdoch, and Sir Humphry Davy and their inventions).

Feel free to email me any of these assignments at amutah@gmail.com or turn them in when we return to school next Monday, December 1.
